This week we are looking at another historic library, the original Danforth Library in Paterson. The Paterson Free Public Library was established in 1885 and is the oldest public library in New Jersey. The second library building was the former residence of Charles Danforth and was on the corner of Market and Church Streets. The building was given to the city by his daughter Mary Ryle in 1888. Mrs. Ryle subsequently financed a substantial expansion of the library right before it was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1902. Images are courtesy of the PCHS Archives.
